4 free ways to support your favorite author.

Since many businesses have streamlined the process of self-publishing, there has been a rise of independent authors. Just like independent musicians, these authors have decided to put their art out on their own; no major company backing them with resources. Although there are many resources available now for these authors, there is still a stigma on the self-publishing community.

You’d be surprised how many authors on Amazon are actually self-published. Social media (Shout out to BookTok) is filled with self-promotion as we fight for our space in the literary community. You may even know someone who self-published their own book. Although a purchase is always top tier, there are other ways to support these authors. Here are a few ways you can support these authors without hitting your pockets.

Interact with them on social media

A follow is easy, but make sure you are also engaging in their content. There’s no better feeling than discussing characters or favorite scenes with readers. This also boosts their social media presence and credibility when working with major companies.

Recommend their books

Even if you haven’t read them, knowing what your fav indie author’s book is about is key to recommending them. Keep an eye out or an ear open when people are discussing books. Recommend them to your book bestie!

Download their free reads

Although Kindle Unlimited is not free (subscription based) it has its perks. Once you pay the fee, you have access to thousands of books and a lot of indie authors use this service. You download the book for free and the indie author gets paid based on pages read. A lot of authors also offer free downloads directly from their website. Check in and see what goodies they have.

Leave reviews

Nothing compares to a good review. Amazon, Goodreads, Google, their direct websites…these are all places you can leave a review for your favorite author. Reviews are vital to the growth of an author’s platform and ultimately, sales.
